Ad Networking

I’d like to see us do something that’s never been done before: create online ads that don’t suck for the user, the advertiser, and the newsorg displaying them.

Users

Sidenote: Set back for a second. You are a user. You see ads. You don’t like them. In trying to craft a new way of doing ads online, we’re going to employ the word “user” a lot. It’s just a euphemism for “you.” If you would hate it, users will too.

The user should see just a few, extremely targeted, ads per view. No one actually likes advertising, … which we need to aim to fix. Users should see the ads that are relevant to their interests. This might be based on browsing history, but it’s really about their profile. Services like F* Connect can assist in creating that.

Furthermore, ads need to be something that you might describe as informative. Coupons, notifications of sales are common ads in print that haven’t really been replicated online. Combining these offerings next to ads for used products (read: classifieds) and we can create a ‘deal center’ that might actually attract users.

Mr. Linch goes to Washington

My DC trip has been finalized: I’ll be there Wednesday to Saturday with limited availability (probably just the evenings). From Wednesday to Friday, I’ll be out in the field working on National Park employee video profiles as part of a University of Miami School of Communication project.

On Saturday, I’ve been invited to this:

I had no idea this was going on until earlier today. I have to leave before it’s over, but I’ll definitely have my CoPress hat on and will see if we can add college news to the mix (I’m sure a lot of it will be translatable).

The hashtag is #rev2oh. Let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to ask/discuss.

TWiC idea: roundtable discussion of monetizing online

Would anyone be interested in taking part in a roundtable discussion for monetizing online for an upcoming This Week in CoPress? I’m split as to whether we should talk about what’s working now, or have a “crazy ideas” discussion. On a conference call with Anthony, David and a couple others a month or so back we had a lot of fun talking about how location-based advertising might apply on a college campus.

Video Superstars

So, here’s the deal: per Daniel’s discovery. We’re gonna submit a grant application to ideablob. The possible prize is $10,000. That’s awarded based on the number of people that vote for an idea. Advantage — CoPress — it looks like 350 or so votes or so will win it. That’s totally achievable.
but… on to the point:
They ask for a long description of the project which can be only 700 char… not a lot. BUT, they let us embed a video. So… I propose we make a video that describes CoPress… it would be a really cool way to promote ourselves (probably should have been done anyway), and would be probably a lot of fun to do.
I propose that the core team and anyone who wants to, spend a few minutes in front of their webcam speaking on the following:

  • who you are and what you do
  • how you heard about CoPress
  • what CoPress is
  • what CoPress does for you
  • where CoPress is heading
  • which is more likely to save the world: CoPress or Superman?

These can then be mashed up into one video and used across the web.
