It’s good to back in the swing of things with our weekly group calls! This one was chock of full goodness.
Before I get into the details, I’d like to welcome Vanessa Bezic, who is joining me as a co-host on This Week in CoPress, season two. Vanessa is a recent graduate of Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, where she studied broadcast journalism. She learned about CoPress this spring from David Cohn, who is now on our board of directors.
Now, on to the call:
We first discussed the Web site redesign, which will launch on Monday. In addition to a post about the redesign on the main blog, look out for another announcement about hosting.
The next item involved an informative video Lauren Rabaino created about innovation. She’ll soon be working on another one as part of our new educational video series.

I e-mailed this link to the group earlier and, unfortunately, still cannot find who tweeted it.
Startups: Start with a Problem, Not an Idea
In searching for the source, I happened upon this post:
Ten unconventional wisdoms for funding startups
Enjoy!
Interesting would probably be the word I would use to describe this week’s team call.
Organization & Operations
Daniel has created a document outlining our strategic goals in each area, which builds on the first version we created. It’s fairly preliminary at the moment, but we will soon hash out goals for the next six months. Look out for more details.
We also discussed Ryan Sholin’s question on Inside CoPress about what is a student and what is college media. We concluded our definition for student would be an undergraduate, at least part-time, who is in good academic standing.
Also in this arena, we’ll be finishing up some Web site changes, starting a document for drafting our bylaws and sending thank you cards to donors.

We now have weekly community calls. We’ll post regular updates on this blog.
We have a new core team member: Emily Kostic!
Emily, whose title will be editorial associate, will work on the CoPress blog and This Week in CoPress podcast.
One of her ideas is to the make the podcast more participatory, possibly by using BlogTalkRadio, recording live shows and allowing listeners to “call in” with questions and comments. This idea goes along nicely with Daniel’s goal of making the podcasts more like a discussion than an interview.
Some background on Emily: as Web editor last semester at The Whit, she oversaw a move from College Publisher to WordPress as CoPress’ first part site. This spring, she serves as both the Web editor and managing editor.
From her experience at The Whit to her awesome blog, we’ve known for awhile that Emily would make a great addition to the team and we’re thrilled to have her on board.
And, just to leave a teaser, we’re looking to add another new team member in the next couple months. Stay tuned…
E-mail Emily at emily [at] copress [dot] org or follow her on Twitter: @emilykostic.
My DC trip has been finalized: I’ll be there Wednesday to Saturday with limited availability (probably just the evenings). From Wednesday to Friday, I’ll be out in the field working on National Park employee video profiles as part of a University of Miami School of Communication project.
On Saturday, I’ve been invited to this:
http://revenuetwopointzero.com
I had no idea this was going on until earlier today. I have to leave before it’s over, but I’ll definitely have my CoPress hat on and will see if we can add college news to the mix (I’m sure a lot of it will be translatable).
The hashtag is #rev2oh. Let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to ask/discuss.
What do you think about these ideas? Please add others in the comments.
- What do you need to have a successful college news org online? (inspired by Alex Klein, Duke Chronicle)
- How do you change the collective mindset from that of a primarily print-centric organization to Web-centric organization?
- How do you staff your paper to work in 24-hours news environment? Who’s in and at what hours? (asked by Emily Ingram, Daily Nebraskan)
- Building an online staff, including bringing programmers/computer science students into the mix
- Regardless of my CMS, what are some free tools I can use to improve my college news site?
I’ll be mostly off the grid from Feb. 5-15 because of a trip to Idaho to cover the Special Olympics winter games with a group from the University of Miami, along with students from various other universities.
I expect to have Internet access when I’m not working, which could be about 20 hours a day. I’ll have my phone with me, of course, so text message or direct message is the best way to get in touch with me for anything pressing.
We’re mostly doing videos and photos, so there are periods when I’ll be completely out of touch.
I’ll keep up with things as best as I can, as well as weigh in as much as possible.
