June 18th: Minn Daily App & How to Take Your Facebook Presense to the Next Level

  • This is huge. We really need to be talking more about this. I’m thinking someone can get in contact with someone at the Minn Daily and get details on the whole process from beginning to end. Because the project is open source, we can expect a lot more college media outlets to be doing this. Maybe the Minn can offer up some advice?

June 24th: Best of Student Media Podcasts

  • An in-depth look on what college newspapers are doing well. Are they daily? Weekly? Do the best podcasts include conversations between staffers on recent news? Are they interviews with staff members or news makers? On the tech side, what equipment do they use to record and edit?

July 1: Analytics – When to Know if You’re Falling Behind

  • Every industry has their standard (found out this summer 4 minutes is the average time visitors spend on cable news’ Web sites). What is it for college newspapers? How many pages does the average reader visit? How do you know when your site is falling behind?

May 10, 2009: Dia de Madre

Daniel, Adam, Joey, Miles, Lauren, and I were on the call this evening.

Hosting

Discussion looked forward this week as Miles summarized the latest in the late fee policy, which states that as it stands right now, late payments will be compounded 2% each week. Miles also noted how he thought it would be nice if Joey send out a weekly email regarding who is missing payment, missing contracts in order to make the hosting needs meet with that of finance.

Also, the need to have a site monitoring service was brought up once again. Miles confirmed that one should definitely be in place by the fall when CoPress will be launching many more sites. Adam suggested possibly using AreMySitesUp.com.

Organization

Discussion was light this week, with Daniel and Adam confirming that the bylaws need to finished up by the 19th for the Board of Directors meeting on the 31st.

April 30, 2009: Community Call

Present on this week’s call: Greg Linch, Daniel Bachhuber, Andrew Spittle, Lauren Rabaino, and Emily Kostic.

First thing addressed on this week’s call was Monday’s This Week in CoPress, which is likely to feature Max Cutler and info on his latest project Courant News. Greg said he’s still waiting to hear back from Max but expects that Monday is likely to still work for TWiC.

Daniel suggested that from CoPress have listeners RSVP so they can be invited onto the call, while others suggested that we look for alternative places to host TWiC.

Also on the call, Greg discussed how over the course of the next month he will be lessening his duties to the associate level, which means the position of Community Manager will be open.

Duties of the Community Manager consist of:

  • Moderation and responding to comments on the blog
  • Posting a question a week in the Forum
  • Managing the Facebook and Twitter account (contributing to conversations)
  • Linking to conversations on the Forum
  • Managing marketing outreach
  • Search for possible partner schools

Andrew Spittle will be helping with a virtual design camp that will take over the summer. The camp will likely to include different schools and bring them together in order to teach others about what they do best. The camp will probably take place over Skype or Adobe Connect, as Adobe Connect allows you to switch between screens. Andrew will be writing a blog post outlining his ideas and his plans for the virtual design camp.

Ideas for a NEW ‘This Week in CoPress’

Since there has been a lot of discussion about making the podcast much more interactive, I have thrown out the idea of doing it on BlogTalkRadio.

For those unfamiliar with BlogTalkRadio, you have to schedule a date and time to record your podcast. You are given a hosting number and then proceed to call from your phone a 1-800 number to log into the show to start it. There is a device called the “switchboard” on BlogTalkRadio’s Web site where you are able to see what chatters are saying and when you have people calling in. To put them on air, it’s just a click away. There is a special call-in number for listeners, just as there would be for a regular talk show. I think it’s worth looking into for “This Week in CoPress.”

Here are my suggestions on how we can make this work:
